Everything you need to know about getting started with Gist
Gist is an iOS app that transforms articles, YouTube videos, and web pages into concise audio summaries. Share any URL from your favorite apps or paste a link directly, and Gist will use AI to extract the key points and read them aloud to you.
Gist uses AI services (like Claude, GPT, or Gemini) to generate summaries. These services require an API key for access. By using your own API key, you have full control over your usage and costs, and your data stays private — we never see your content or keys.
The Gist app itself is free. However, you'll need API keys from AI providers, which may have their own costs. Google Gemini offers a generous free tier (1,500 requests/day), and Apple's built-in text-to-speech is completely free.
Choose any AI provider to power your summaries. We recommend starting with Google Gemini — it's free and works great.
Google's Gemini offers a completely free tier with 1,500 requests per day — no credit card required.
Claude is known for nuanced, thoughtful summaries. Requires a credit card for billing.
OpenAI's GPT models provide fast, reliable summaries. Requires a credit card.
xAI's Grok model offers a unique perspective on content summarization.
OpenRouter gives you access to multiple AI models through a single API key. Some models are free.
Choose how Gist reads summaries aloud. Apple's built-in voice is free and works offline.
Built into iOS — no setup required. Works offline, completely free, and your audio never leaves your device.
Ultra-realistic AI voices with emotional range. Free tier includes 10,000 characters/month.
High-quality text-to-speech from OpenAI. Uses the same API key as GPT.
Yes. Your API keys are stored securely in your device's Keychain — the same system iOS uses for passwords. Keys never leave your device and are never sent to our servers.
No. Gist doesn't have user accounts, doesn't track you, and doesn't collect any data. The content you summarize goes directly from your device to your chosen AI provider — we're never in the middle.
AI summarization requires an internet connection. However, if you use Apple's built-in text-to-speech, you can listen to previously generated summaries offline.
Gist can summarize most web content including:
From any app (Safari, YouTube, Twitter, etc.):
If you don't see Gist, scroll to the end and tap "More" to enable it.
Summary length depends on the original content and can be customized in settings. By default, Gist creates concise summaries that capture the key points in 1-3 minutes of audio.
